Book Description:   Captain Jacob Edmondson, a Union cavalryman and West Point Graduate, desperately wants to fight in the war that is expected in the east. In the spring of 1861 he is stuck in a dead end assignment at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. His many requests for transfer, back east, have been turned down. Finally, as the threat of rebellion looms nearer, his request is approved. He observes the embarrassing Union defeat at Bull Run and vows to never run in battle. He is temporarily posted as the executive officer of a prisoner of war camp in Maryland where he discovers that his brother, a Confederate soldier, is being held as a prisoner. He risks his career, and possibly his life, to help his brother escape. After the escape, Jacob is assigned to the 2nd Cavalry, fighting in Western Tennessee. He sees his brother, once again, when they come face to face, in battle, at a little known place called Shiloh!
